Bring the Harvest Home

Help “Bring the Harvest Home”

Local food pantries have seen requests for grocery assistance increase by up to 44 percent since this summer. The spike has coincided with a dwindling supply of donations, leaving area pantries in a dire spot and vulnerable to not being able to assist area residents. On Oct. 4, 2011, the Marion County Board of County Commissioners launched a 21-day food drive called “Bring the Harvest Home” to help re-stock these depleted food pantries and provide aid for Marion County’s most needy residents.

The pantries are in most urgent need of:

- Dry goods/foods that complement dry goods (rice, pasta, pasta sauce, cereal, crackers, peanut butter and jelly).
- Canned meats (corned beef, corned beef hash, ham and tuna).
- Canned vegetables and fruit.
- Baby items (ranging from powdered formula and jarred food to diapers and lotion).
- Toiletries, such as soap, shampoo, deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste and toilet paper are also always needed.

Cash/check donations

If you would prefer to donate by cash or check, please contact one of the main food pantries directly:

- Brother’s Keeper (352-622-3846).
- Interfaith (352-629-8868).
- Salvation Army (352-732-8326).
