Green Building Practices

From 1982 1997, urbanized land in Florida increased by 54%, almost double that of the national average of 34%.

In order to preserve the integrity of natural resources and the rural character of Marion County, it is critical to manage land use responsibly.

A primary objective of the Community Sustainability Program is to educate contractors, developers, homeowners, and county officials about resource efficient communities and green building concepts.

Some sustainable land-development topics include:

  • High density development
  • Mixed commercial and residential zoning districts
  • Compact Development
  • Increased access to public transit
  • Passive solar design
  • Bicycle and Pedestrian-Friendly Communities
  • Low impact development
