Preparedness - Disaster Kit

Emergency Kit:

The best time to assemble a three-day emergency supply kit is well before you'll ever need it. Most people already have these items around the house and it is a matter of assembling them now before you need it.

Start with an easy to carry watertight container. A large plastic trash can will do, or line a sturdy cardboard box with a couple of trash bags. Next gather up the following items and place them in your kit:

Essentials:

bulletWater (at least one gallon per person per day)
bulletWater purification kit or bleach
bulletPurchase a first aid kit that meets OHSA and ANSI standards and first aid book
bulletPre-cooked, non-perishable foods such as canned meats, granola bars, instant
        soup, cereals, etc
bulletInsurance policy information and contact numbers
bulletBaby supplies: formula, bottles, pacifier, soap, baby power, clothing, blankets,
baby wipes, disposable diapers, canned food, and juices

bulletNon-electric can opener
bulletAnti-bacterial hand wipes or gel
bulletOne blanket or sleeping bag per person
bulletPortable radio or portable TV with extra batteries
bulletFlashlight and extra batteries
bulletEssential medications
bulletExtra pair of eyeglasses (or contacts)
bulletExtra house and car keys
bulletFire extinguisher - ABC multipurpose
bulletFood, water, leash and carrier for pets
bulletCash and change
bulletSeasonal change of clothing, including sturdy shoes

Sanitation Supplies:

bulletLarge plastic trash bags for waste, tarps and rain ponchos
bulletLarge trash cans
bulletBar soap and liquid detergent
bulletShampoo
bulletToothpaste and toothbrushes
bulletFeminine hygiene supplies
bulletToilet paper
bulletHousehold bleach
bulletRubber gloves

Stocking up now on emergency supplies can add to you family's safety and
comfort during and after a disaster. Store enough supplies for at least three
days, preferably seven days, in one place. If you expect to stay at home fill
bath tubs with water for flushing toilets.
