Disaster Preparedness - Help for Seniors

Marion County cares about its large and continually growing population of senior citizens. If you are a senior citizen or care for older family members, you may need to take special precautions.

Some points to understand when assisting seniors during a disaster:

  • It can be more difficult for some seniors to understand the significance of what is taking place. Some could become easily confused or disoriented.

  • Many elderly people do not want to evacuate even when ordered to do so. They would rather "ride it out" at the home, where they know and feel comfortable.

  • During a crisis, many elderly people will decide to stay home out of love for their pets. As a result, they may not want to go to a public shelter because, in most cases, their pet cannot accompany them.

  • Seniors with special needs require more planning. They move more slowly and with greater effort than younger people do. They are inclined to have more medicines, medical aides such as walkers, and other considerations that require more advanced planning and preparation.

  • They may require special medical attention, such as the assistance they would receive at a special needs shelter.

  • When evacuating, senior citizens may need to stop frequently.

Before the Disaster:

  • Know the threat to your home. In Marion County wildfire, tornadoes, strong wind sheer and flash flooding are among our main concerns.

  • Have a plan of where to go, such as a public shelter, special needs shelter, family, or friends home.

  • If you need assistance with transportation or special needs, you should contact the Marion County Sheriffs Office Division of Emergency Management to register for special assistance at 352-622-3205.

  • Have a plan for your pet. Most public shelters do not accept pets. The Marion County Humane Society and many area veterinarians will assist with boarding.
