Do the Drill:  Practice Your Fire Escape Plan

Firefighters recommend that you keep two "ABC" approved fire extinguishers in your home and place them in different areas (i.e. kitchen and garage).

Different Types of Fire Extinguishers

Fire Extinguisher Safety Tips

Make sure extinguishers are charged and working properly.

Purchase at least a five or 10-pound extinguisher.

Purchase a dry chemical fire extinguisher.

Do not test your fire extinguisher to see if it works. This will make it useless.

Understand how to use and aim it properly.

Have your fire extinguisher inspected annually.

Fire extinguishers are for fires no larger than the size of a small wastebasket.

PASS Method

Pull the safety pin on the extinguisher.
Aim the hose of the extinguisher at the base of the fire.
Squeeze the handle to discharge the material.
Sweep the hose across the base of the fire from side to side.

Call 9-1-1

Get out of the home and call 9-1-1 if the fire is too large (bigger than the size of a wastebasket) to handle.

If you're able to extinguish the fire, call 9-1-1 to ensure it did not spread to other areas of the home.
