Fire Safety and Injury Prevention

Marion County Fire Rescue believes when people are informed they can make better decisions. When it comes to fire rescue, those decisions can mean the difference between life and death. MCFR is committed to informing, empowering and encouraging citizens to lead healthier, safer lives. Although no family can prevent all accidents and no home is fireproof, simple safety tips can significantly decrease the impact fire and other emergencies have on families.

MCFR firefighters participate hundreds of community education events yearly, visiting schools, daycare centers, neighborhood associations, civic groups, assisted living facilities and retirement communities. It's estimated that these events reached thousands of citizens of all ages.

To request a public education event for your group, please call Peveeta Persaud, MCFR's Public Education Specialist at (352) 291-8064 or click here to submit an e-mail request.

Fire Prevention Month:
Get Down! Get Out! Get on the Phone!

Learn more about Fire Prevention Month.

MCFR expands nationally observed fire prevention week into an entire month of learning activities yearly during October. The first Fire Prevention Month campaign was launched in October 2007, and MCFR has since partnered consistently with Marion County Public Schools to teach children life-saving fire safety messages. The fire prevention month themes are created from previous local test data. Recent data revealed that students were confusing when and where they should call 9-1-1. Students mistakenly thought they should call 9-1-1 from inside a burning building and the Get Down. Get Out. Get on the Phone! campaign was formed.

To address the local statistics, firefighters visit each of Marion's 32 public elementary schools, reaching nearly 21,000 students yearly. Our staff provides curriculum that teach Florida's Sunshine State Standards and fire safety lessons, and we spark creativity with a countywide poster.

MCFR's Fire Prevention month campaign has received awards from the Florida Public Relations Association and the Florida Fire Chiefs' Association, recognizing its solid public relations practices.
