Weapons
of Mass Destruction (WMD)
Emergency agencies across the country have stepped up security
following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, and the
current war on terrorism. Prior to this, fire rescue and law
enforcement agencies, health departments and hospitals had very
little knowledge or understanding of how each other operated.
Crews from city, county, state and federal agencies know what to
expect from each other and routinely train together unlike ever
before.
Now, MCFR and other emergency response agencies are better
prepared and equipped to identify and mitigate incidents
involving weapons of mass destruction. This includes biological
and chemical weapons such as anthrax, ricin, sarin and VX nerve
agents. Although terrorists have not directly threatened Marion
County, the possibility exists, and first responders want to be
ready.
Double-Barreled
Duty
MCFR provides expertise in hazardous materials identification
and mitigation as well as advanced life support emergency care
during hostile environments in partnership with law enforcement
agencies.
Through coordinated efforts like these, public safety agencies
can expedite potential weapons of mass destruction emergencies
more efficiently as well as secure a hostile scene, triage
patients and remove injured patients.
