Section 403.76 of the Florida Statutes gives the governing body of each County in Florida, the responsibility and power to provide for the operations of Solid Waste Management Facilities to meet the needs of all incorporated and unincorporated areas of the County.

The Florida Statutes and the rules of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) also place many requirements on the way that each County manages its solid waste.

In order to manage the solid waste disposal in Marion County, the Marion County Board of County Commissioners created the Solid Waste Department.  This was to insure that all solid waste disposal practices were in compliance with both the State of Florida Statues and of the FDEP rules and regulations.

Where are we going with Solid Waste disposal in Marion County?

The Marion County Board of County Commissioners previously voted for  some of the future solid waste disposal to be transferred out of county.  Through the recently constructed transfer stations, the Board is currently accessing other long term disposal options to include waste-to-energy, plasma arc, etc.
