Useful Survey Terminology

 

Benchmark: An established vertical elevation which vertical surveys are based on.

Horizontal Control Point: A monument which has a recognized known position that surveys are based off of.

Legal Description: Describes a particular piece of land.

Monument: Either a concrete marker or a rebar with plastic cap which identifies a property corner.

PC: Point of curvature

PID: Parcel ID number used by the Marion County Property Appraiser's Office to identify parcels of land.

Plat: A recorded survey of a subdivision

PSM: Professional Surveyor and Mapper, formerly known as PLS (Professional Registered Licensed Surveyor)

PT: Point of Tangency

Section Corner: Corners established by original government surveys to divide land.
