The stormwater management system along the Marion County road network
requires constant care to maintain an acceptable level of service for
water quality and quantity control. Routine mowing
occurs on road right-of-ways and drainage retention areas (DRAs). In
addition, the Road Division addresses routine repairs such as erosion,
minor structure damage, and sinkhole repairs. There are times, however,
when a higher degree of maintenance work is required.
Compiled below are several projects initiated by the Stormwater
Division to address large scale maintenance projects, as well
as, known water quality and drainage issues.
The Pipe and Swale Restoration projects begin with a
comprehensive investigation of the condition of swales and associated
pipes along County-maintained roads. Work includes cleaning of clogged
pipes, grading of swales and replacement of crushed pipes to ensure
proper runoff flow. End treatments are constructed for pipes that do not
have a mitered concrete end-section to protect them from future damage.
Other Major Maintenance work involves the removal of
tree and vegetative debris, clearing, grubbing, grading, fence repair,
and soil stabilization in overgrown DRAs. The goal of this work is to
restore the DRAs to their original, constructed condition and
functionality.
