Certification is required in Florida for food managers of all establishments licensed by the Department of Business and Professional Regulations, the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and selected licensees of the Department of Health.

4-H Camp Ocala: Overnight Camp for Youth

Whether your child is a member of 4-H or not, come enjoy a week of overnight camping fun at the 4-H Camp Ocala in the Ocala National Forest. There'll be loads of fun activities like kayaking, archery, crafts, orienteering, and swimming!

Based on year’s theme of “Who’s Your Super Hero," we will be exploring the many ways in which everyday heroes impact our lives and the ways in which we can become heroes for others!

Camp is open to youth ages 8 (as of September 1, 2009) to 13 and is run by the University of Florida 4-H Youth Development Program.  There will be a mandatory meeting for parents and youth interested in attending this camp on Tuesday, June 1 at 6 pm in the new Extension Service Auditorium on Jacksonville Road. Florida Small Farms Alternative Enterprises Conference

Includes many activities that benefit small farmers including:

  • A general educational session to attract well known speakers on topics of broad interest.

  • Concurrent educational sessions (presentations, workshops, hands-on demonstration, and discussion groups) will be provided to share results of groundbreaking research and provide educational support for producers to operate sustainable and profitable enterprises.

  • A large exhibition area to introduce new products and technologies to small producers will be available. Industry suppliers, allied organizations, educational groups, funding agencies, foundations, and other allied industry representatives with services for small farmers will be encouraged to participate. The 2009 conference attracted 80 exhibitors and well over 100 are expected in 2010.

  • Other activities will include other creative ways to facilitate farmer networking at the Conference.

  • All these activities in total will help facilitate networking, dialog, and visioning among members of the Florida small farms community, and to increase awareness of the small farms industry to decision makers, supporting institutions, and the general public.

The annual 4-H Bake Sale is a community service project, where 4-H’ers compete for awards in different categories including drop, bar and roll. The cookies are then packaged in a large mixed variety and sold to the public. With the holidays fast approaching, these make great gifts. You will also be helping those less fortunate in our community, because all proceeds will be donated to the "Food 4 Kids" program.

Agricultural Hall of Fame 2011 Deadline

Do you know someone, living or deceased, who has made tremendous achievements in the furtherance of agriculture in Marion County? The Marion County Extension Service is accepting nominations for the 2011 Marion County Agricultural Hall of Fame. Selected candidates are inducted at the annual Agricultural Hall of Fame banquet, held in mid April.

Anyone can submit a nomination on behalf of a candidate. Application forms are available online.
