Sunrise to Sunset
The Baseline Trail and trailhead area of the Cross
Florida Greenway (CFG) was once slated to be part of the
corridor for the sea-level Cross Florida Ship Canal
project in the 1930’s and the latter Cross Florida Barge
Canal (CFBC) in the 1960’s and 70’s. Remnant digging/s
from the 1930’s sea-level project still remain in the
northeastern portion of the paved trail area that
remains today where the Frisbee disc golf course is
located. After the CFBC was de-authorized by Congress
and matching legislation by the State of Florida was
enacted in the early 1990’s the former canal lands were
established as the Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida
Greenway as they exist today.
In 2005, the Non-Profit Felburn Foundation funded a
portion of the Boundless Playground, which offers
amenities for children of all abilities and opportunity
to play side-by-side. The trails, playground and other
amenities are maintained through a cooperative
partnership between the Office of Greenways and Trails
and the Marion County Parks and Recreation Department.
