The Marion County Solid Waste Department offers a Sharps Disposal Program to help facilitate the proper disposal of hypodermic needles that could become a hazard to the public if improperly thrown away. The program is especially intended to assist residents with certain illnesses, such as diabetes.

The program assists in the proper disposal of hypodermic needles that could become a hazard to the public if improperly thrown away.

The program was expanded in June 2006 to allow all 18 Marion County Recycling Centers to accept used needles in appropriate containers.

There remain some restrictions on the program:

  • It is for private citizens only, not health care providers or businesses.

  • Individuals dropping off used needles in containers will receive one empty sharps container per trip (maximum of one new container per day) for future use at no charge.
